What you need to know about the Crestview Nursing Home scandal
Vice News has learned that the Crestpark Nursing Home is under investigation by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for possible fraud.
The agency has been reviewing the nursing home since January 2017, when a whistleblower reported finding $2 million in unauthorized spending in Medicaid reimbursements to the nursing homes.
The nursing home was the subject of a scathing inspector general report in March 2018.
The investigation has focused on the facility in Crestview, Texas.
In an exclusive interview with Vice News, the whistleblower who brought the allegations to the agency, who has requested anonymity, said the nursing facility used Medicare reimbursement funds to pay the wages of nursing home workers, including the owners of the nursing facilities.
According to the whistleblower, the payments were made to the owners on behalf of the facility’s staff members.
The whistleblowers’ story was detailed in a report from the House Oversight Committee, released this week.
In the report, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking member of the House oversight committee, wrote that the allegations of fraud are “deeply troubling” and that the agency should investigate the nursing center’s use of Medicare reimbursements.
“The agency’s failure to address the allegations in the IG’s report is further evidence of its continuing inability to protect patients, nursing home residents, and their families,” the report reads.
In a statement to Vice News on Wednesday, the agency denied that any employees were paid off the books.
“We will not comment on personnel matters or any pending investigations,” the agency said in a statement.
“In fact, we’ve asked for the IG to take the time to fully investigate the matter.”
The Crestview nursing homes are owned by the Sisters of Charity Nursing Home, a nursing home that was set up in 1885 and is now part of the Sisters’ estate.
The company, which was founded by a group of sisters, was purchased by the Hospice and Palliative Care Services in 2008.
The hospital was established in 1963 by the late Josephine Withers.
The Crestpark nursing home opened in 1997.
