With the death of her mother and her father, Lisa McEwan found herself in a difficult position.
“My mum was my main source of income, but she was also a social worker.
She was the most important person to me.
So when my mum died, I was completely alone,” she said.”
McEwan has been an advocate for mental health and drug addiction issues in Belhaven, a small town on the north coast of New South Wales. “
I was at a stage where I was losing all my money, I wasn’t making a living and it was a time when I was in a really difficult position.”

She works at the Belhaven Nursing Home, a privately run facility run by the Belsee Family Trust.
Her family live there and have been in and out of care since her mother died.

It was my mother’s death, but there was another death that took place at the same time that affected my sister and me.

I couldn’t find a solution’After her mother’s suicide, McEswan took a job as a social work social worker at the hospital.
But she says the situation has only worsened.
“I can’t get on with my family because they are going through a very difficult time, and it is very hard to deal with, especially when you have a disability,” she told Al Jazeera.
McEswans mother, who was a social workers supervisor, died of suicide in October, leaving her with an unresolved mental health problem.
She was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but McEswan said she never got help for the rest of her life.
“At the end of the day, I can’t find the right solution,” she added.
The mental health care system is not doing enough to address the issues of mental illness and addiction, she said, calling for more funding for mental healthcare and more resources for addiction services.
“We need to take a step back and look at what’s the solution.
I’m very happy with my work, but the world needs to know that there are people who have been here and are not suffering and that there is a solution.”
There’s no magic bullet.
“Al Jazeera’s Sarah Firth, reporting from Sydney, Australia, says a lot more needs to be done to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.
She says mental health services are not always provided to those in crisis, with the average rate of referrals being around 30%.
Firth says Australia has an ageing population, with many people not getting the help they need.
She adds that stigma and stigma can prevent people from seeking help.
